You may already be aware that Tiger Woods has undergone an anterior lumbar interbody fusion, or ALIF. This is a surgery that is also covered by Minimally Invasive Spine and Joint Center. This is a procedure to help someone dealing with back pain or spasms. Having this kind of example to look to is sure to make this a much easier time for you. We will also be glad to tell you more about what to expect.
Why Would You Need an ALIF Surgery?
It may help to understand what is causing your back pain. Ultimately, it is best to trust Dr. Katzell at MISJC with his proficient expertise, but your research can be a big help. Reasons you may need this surgery are:
• Scoliosis
• Spondylolisthesis
• Degenerative disc disease
Overall, many different reasons and injuries may cause you to consider ALIF, it is best to talk to Dr. Jeffery Katzell about your specific injury. He is experienced in this procedure and is knowledgeable about if a patient is a good candidate. Since this is a surgery that will replace a disc in your back, it is important that you go to Minimally Invasive Spine and Joint Center and consider all your options.
What Is This Procedure?
While this procedure may be unlikely to completely remove the patient’s back pain, it will be much more manageable. It is important to discuss the type of pain you have with Dr. Katzell. Once he has agreed that this is something you need, he can tell you more about it. Typically, a vertical incision will be made below the bellybutton to the pelvis. From there he will continue down to the anterior surface of the lumbar spine. The entirety of that disc will be removed and replaced with a cage containing a metal, plastic, or bone graft. It will be secured into place with screws between the vertebral bodies, above and below the interbody cage. Since this procedure removes the disc it will reduce the chance of a recurrent disc herniation. Since Tiger Woods was not a candidate for a disc replacement, you may want to ask about how your surgery could differ at Minimally Invasive Spine and Joint Center.
What Makes This Procedure Beneficial?
A benefit of this procedure is it preserves the lower back muscles, making it easier to recover and move on to your regular activities. This is why Tiger Woods has been able to return to playing golf. Fusions can also be performed higher up the spine if that’s necessary. This is something you would have to speak with Dr. Katzell about. We want to make sure you understand that while this is a surgery that sees high rates of success and recovery, not everyone is able to return to their original prowess. If you have any concerns, feel free to discuss them with Dr. Katzell at MISJC. We will do everything we can to help you feel comfortable.
Recovery After an ALIF Surgery
Luckily, patients don’t typically have to stay at the hospital more than a few days after their procedure. From there they simply have to follow the doctor’s instructions which may include:
• Not bending at the waist or sharply twisting your back for around two months
• No strenuous activity for around two weeks
• Do not smoke or drink alcohol, it will prevent new bone growth and may thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding
• Do not try to lift anything heavier than five pounds for the first 2 weeks
How Long Should Recovery Take?
If the patient properly avoids too much physical activity for the first 2-4 weeks, most patients will find that they can return to work after 3-6 weeks. Although it varies from patient to patient, total recovery typically takes about 3-6 months. Of course, it is also important to have follow-up appointments with Dr. Katzell throughout the whole process.
How Do I Manage Pain After Surgery?
Dr. Katzell may advise patients to avoid lying down or sitting in one position for more than an hour. Ice can reduce pain and swelling it may help to ice your incision for 15-20 minutes, 3-4 times a day.
How Is Recovery Different Than Other Spinal Surgeries?
Since this procedure makes a frontal approach through the abdomen, the muscles and nerves in the back won’t be as affected. Not having as many muscles to heal can make the recovery process go by faster.
